The 7th of Falgun (Prajatantra Diwas)
Falgun 7 is the Democracy Day of Nepal (Prajatantra Diwas).
Falgun 7 is the day when Nepal was liberated from 104 years of Rana regime.
Falgun 7 is the day when democracy was established. The
7th of Phalgun is a great festival of the Nepalese. It is celebrated all over
Nepal. It is our independence day. We celebrate it with great zeal. There is a
big celebration of Prajatantra Diwas in Tundikhel with Army march and different
cultural exhibitions. But the celebration is going to be down. Although the
public holiday on the day Falgun 7 is still there. Official celebrations are
gone.
There is a historical fact behind this festival. The Ranas
ruled over Nepal. Although there was a king, the Ranas were all in all. There
was an absolute government. The son or the brother of the Rana Prime Minister
succeeded him. The Prime Minister was very tyrant. Nobody could speak against
the Ranas. Some people tried to end this rule. Some of them were killed by the
Rana government. The remaining did not lose heart, B.P. Koirala, Manmohan
Adhikari, Pushpalal Pradhan, Dilliraman Regmi, Tank Prasad Acharya, Ganeshman
Singh etc., continued the struggle. They were punished and sent to jail. King
Tribhuvan also joined. He left his throne and fled to Delhi. The Nepali
Congress launched an armed revolution. At last Prime Minister, Mohan Shamsher
had to yield. On the 7th of Phalgun 2007 B.C. the Rana rule came to an end.
This festival is a happy festival. There is a holiday on
this occasion. People gather together and hold processions. They hold meetings
and deliver lectures on the importance of this day. They make new promises to
strengthen democracy. At night people burn lamps to express their joys.
Everybody is happy. It is really a happy occasion.
