Essay on 'Importance of Cottage Industries in Nepal'

Cottage industries are the industries which produce small amounts of goods by using local skills. Cottage industries are very old in Nepal. Weaving cloth, carpet, making blankets, and various kinds of metal works are the example of our cottage industries.

Cottage industries are very important for Nepal. They have contributed to the national production. They can provide the Nepalese with job opportunities. Even farmers can utilize their spare time after the harvest season is over. There are different kinds of raw materials in Nepal which can be used to run cottage industries. Cottage industries supply the local people with their daily needs. So import of goods can be cut down. Cottage industries can be a good source of foreign currency by exporting carpet, handicraft etc. They help to preserve local skills and technology. One advantage of cottage industries is that they require small capital.

Our cottage industries are facing some problems. Firstly, they have to compete with the imported goods which are cheaper than the native goods. Not only this, large scale industries also are its competitors. Secondly, there is lack of suitable market. Thirdly, lacks of capital, transport, protection and publicity are great hindrances for our cottage industries.

A country like Nepal, where there is less capital, skilled manpower, less developed science and technology, less skill, a cottage industry can be suitable to run. It brings the foundation for economic development of a country. It ultimately leads towards economic prosperity. Out cottage industries need encouragement. Our government and public should take interest in the development of native cottage industries.
