Lord Buddha was a noble son of Nepal. His name spread in the world. He showed the world a new way. His religion is known as Buddhism. He is still remembered and respected. He is also called the “Light Of Asia”.

He was born in Lumbini more than 2500 years ago. He was the son of king Suddhodan and queen Mayadevi. His actual name is Siddhartha Gautama (Gautam). He was brought up by his step mother. 


Siddhartha had no interest in the worldly affairs. He always looked thoughtful. King Suddhodan provided him with all pleasures of life. He got married a beautiful girl named Yashodhara. A son was born to him.

One day he came out of his palace to travel through the city. He saw an old man, a sick man and at last a dead man being carried to the cremation ghat. He understood what life meant. He became very sad. One night he left his palace, wife and son. He wanted to solve the mystery of life and death. He became an ascetic and lived a hard life. But he did not find the truth. Then he adopted the middle path.

At last he started hard meditation bearing great physical suffering. After six years of wandering and meditation Siddhartha got enlightenment when he was sitting in meditation under a Pipal tree. He got knowledge. He found truth. He knew there is sorrow. There is the cause of sorrow. The sorrow can be ended. Then he went to Sarnath near Varanasi. He preached the people the truth. Many ordinary people and kings became his disciples (learner). 



Buddhism is identified with the principles of non-violence. The 'Tripitaka' is a collection of Buddha's teachings, life and philosophical discourses on the teachings and the commentaries.

Therefore, Gautama Buddha was one of the greatest religious teachers of the world. He gave the message of truth, peace, humanity and equality. His teachings and sayings became the basis of Buddhism, one of world's leading religions which are followed in some countries like Nepal, Japan, China, India and Burma etc. he breathed his last at the age of 80 at Kushinagar.
