Some rivers are big and some are small. They all flow from the north to the south. Some of them are always full of water while others get dry in summer. The big rivers in Nepal which flow around the whole year are Gandaki, Koshi, Karnali, Mechi, Mahakali. The rivers in Nepal can be divided into three kinds according to its origin. The first kind of the rivers flows from the Himalayas. This type of river flow from high land to low land around the whole year. Such rivers are most important rivers because they can be used to produce electricity through hydropower. The second kind of rivers begins from the Mahabharata range. And the third kind of the rivers begins from Chure range.

Rivers are considered very holy and so we worship them in our country. The Hindus believe that river bath helps attain heaven. That is why thousands of people go to the Koshi, Kamala and others rivers on religious festivals. The dead body is also burnt on the river banks for the same religious belief.

We can take advantage of the rivers in many ways. They provide us with fish, turtles, waterfowl and other articles of food. They help us irrigate the land. Rivers and river valley projects provide electric power. We can get drinking water and construction materials from the rivers. Stone, san, pebbles, gravel, etc.  from rivers can be used in various ways. Tourist can be increased by motorboat, rafting and so on.

Rivers are a blessing but they are also a challenge. When they are in flood they are a curse. They bring about devastation. Crops, houses, animals, and men have washed away. Besides, the water of most rivers has been polluted. Most of the cities make the rivers dumping site. So these kinds of activities should be banned.

Though the rivers can give a lot of benefits, Nepal has not been able to utilize them properly. If we are able to use the water resource properly, we can develop our country easily. There is no denying the fact that Nepal can sell its electricity to its gigantic neighbors India and China thereby adding a huge foreign currency into the pocket of its budget. The future of Nepal can be brightened if water resource is utilized well.

...Thank You...
